Emma and Sam have been swimming each day this week for half an hour with Wings Swim school.  There is a maximum of 3 students per teacher, although there are around 6 or 7 teachers in the pool at any one time.  From our baby swimming both Emma and Sam have been fairly water confident, although Sam has had a few wobbles in the past 4 years. Well I’m so impressed with the progress they’ve made.  The first day Sam was one to one with a teacher which really boosted his confidence in “deep” water – ie where he couldn’t touch the bottom.  The second and subsequent lesson’s he’s had to go back into Emma’s class with one other child.  We were lucky enough to get the swim school owner as our teacher, but from what I can see they are all great.

Over the week there has been a big emphasis on back floating, using noodles and floats.  Today the children did it without any help aside from a bit from the teacher.  Emma did keep rolling over every time she realised he had let go, which did hinder her a bit.  Sam did an amazing job.  Unfortunately I missed his best swim…he did over 5 metres with absolutely no help at all.  I nearly cried I was so proud.  In the video Emma goes first, and it took me a while to get the picture good.  At the end you can see Sam swim a reasonable distance on his own.

Needless to say we have joined up for the September term – at 8:30am on a Sunday morning!! Hows that for dedication.  Obviously that will only be once a week, but hopefully that kind of progress will continue.  The great thing about all the teachers is they are up for a laugh with the kids and look like they are having a great time, they are all young and so enthusiastic it seems to really rub off on the kids.  There is a great vibe around the pool.  I’m so glad I signed up after some random people approached me on Twickenham green one morning, as I normally wave those people away.

Enjoy!
